VO and Radio Hosts-Got A Fever? Keep it!
Feverish…it conjures up pictures in our minds of shivering person, maybe on a battlefield or the turn of the century when there were “fainting couches” and “smelling salts” for the delicate in nature. While a fever does make you feel achy (and feverish), chilled, hot and uncomfortable, it can be useful. A fever is the body’s natural way of killing viruses by creating a hotter-than-normal environment. Also, a fever’s hot environment makes germ-killing proteins in your blood circulate more quickly and effectively. So, while it’s tempting to pop a Tylenol or Ibuprofen to rid yourself of the symptoms, if you can endure a moderate fever for a day or two, you may actually get well faster.
We are in the season for germs and viruses to run rampant and while none of us wants to get sick, sometimes it happens. Especially if you’re in contact with school-age children. Our best defense is good hand washing hygiene and our best offense is to help the body in the healing process. Next time we’ll talk about the value of the cough!
